Fabric to Leather Re-upholstery
One of the trickier jobs that we handle is a fabric to leather re-upholstery project. This is where someone has a sofa, chair or other furniture that current has some kind of fabric on it and they want to swap this for leather. While it isn’t impossible, there are a few things to consider before we will say yes, we can do it.
Firstly, while leather is a very durable material, it isn’t as soft or comfortable as fabric. Even with the same cushioning as the fabric, the sofa will definitely feel different. Leather is created so there’s very little stretch which is another difference from upholstery fabric, and this means there’s no give when you sit down.
Another consideration is that the material isn’t porous, and this often means a change to some styling or design elements of the furniture to let air move in and out of the cushions. One example is using partial cushion covers at the front and top while leaving the bottom and back uncovered.
It is very possible to change from a fabric to a leather upholstery on a piece of furniture. It is just worth remembering that it will be a little different once the change is made so you know what to expect.
