Fabric to Leather Upholstery
The idea of going from fabric to leather upholstery might sound a simple one – just take the fabric off and put the leather on! But there’s more to it than that and that’s why you want to have an upholstery expert handling it for you.
For example, leather is a lot firmer than fabric and that means it usually needs more padding or cushioning to feel the same. It also stretches less than fabric because it is treated and that means much less give when you sit down. Finally, it isn’t as porous as fabric so there need to be ways for the padding of your cushions to breath and for air to move – that’s why there is often a fabric or mesh panel on the underside of leather cushions.
This doesn’t mean it can’t be done – it just needs to be done in the correct way. Another consideration is that leather doesn’t stitch the way fabric does which is why leather furniture has special nails in it. So the furniture needs to have the right framework for leather to be added.
