If you are having your furniture reupholstered or are even designing your own bespoke items, then the right upholstery is a big part of the process. Here are some top upholstery tips to help you make informed, confident choices.
Durability is a big factor in choosing a material. A woven pattern will last longer than a printed one while a higher thread count and tighter weave will usually last longer than a lower count or looser weave. You will see a thread count that tells you how many threads the fabric has per square inch. Also choose fabrics around who uses the furniture – for example, if you have pets, you want to look at fabrics that are blended with man-made materials or leather. These will withstand frequent use and be less likely to get ripped by claws.
The style of the upholstery should fit in with the style and character of the furniture. For example, if you have a traditional style chair, you may want to go with a traditional material. Of course, there’s no rule around this, you can pair ultra-modern materials with traditional furniture and vice versa.
The colour also plays a big part – make sure you choose one you are happy with for a long time. You probably don’t want to be reupholstering every couple of years so consider what you like now but what you might want to do with room décor next when making a choice.
