Many years ago, there was a 'make and mend do' mentality that was ingrained in virtually everyone; items were too precious, too expensive and too well-made to just be discarded. And so, what tended to happen was that the item received a new lease of life.
With some tender loving care, a new spring here and there, new cushions and padding, as well as some much-needed new upholstery, the sofa or chair could look as good as new. And the saying 'a new lease of life' would also be bandied about.
And then came the age of consumerism
Easy credit meant that the latest looks and trends were available to the consumer, from white goods in the kitchen to the must-have-leather-look-sofa-with-in-built-recliner. But cheap money meant the goods may not have been the same quality and so, when it began to look tired and jaded, the same thing would happen - you would choose a new sofa, and if you didn't have the readies to hand, you would buy on a credit agreement.
But two things happened: the various recession, including the latest one in the UK we are still climbing out of and the need to look after the precious natural resources we have. This has created new technologies and revitalised 'old ones' and so that is why upholstery is once again on trend and in fashion!
It probably isn't broken
The sofa might look a little ropey, jaded and seen better days; the stuffing may have lost its bounce and oomph but these are all repairable.
The structure of the sofa, chair, stool etc. is probably completely sound and so that is why upholstery can be the great alternative to hours shopping looking at the same old sofa in just a slightly different shade or shape…
Where the true value lays
Homeowners from decades past new one important act; the value of a piece of furniture was in the frame. Antique pieces or older, vintage pieces of furniture will be made from hardwood, from a slow growing tree and now, in today's modern, fast paced world, this is why upholstery is garnering favour once again.
Why get rid of something so delightful and beautiful? Upholstery can give it a new look on the surface but, with some great new repairs, as well as new modern, fire-safe wadding and stuffing, any piece of furniture can really be brought back in to service, perfect for the hectic pace of modern life. Older pieces of furniture were built to last for a very long time…
It is an art
And like many other creative profession, upholstery is an art and a skill; choosing the right fabric for the item that the clients like, as well as creating the perfect piece that will last and last… and it is this excitement and re-creating a piece of furniture which is why upholstery is becoming more and more popular… again.
