Upholstery Glasgow West
How do know if you have an upholstery project on your hands or not?
The likelihood you really may not know if your item of furniture is ripe of recovering or reupholstering and so here, we have tried to answer some of those questions for potential customers in and around Glasgow West… and further afield too!
Is there a difference between recovering an item and re-upholstery?
If you are looking in finer technical detail, then yes there is. Here at Upholstery Scotland we do all manner of projects including recovering, which is the process of simply changing the outer fabric of a sofa, chair etc. without the need for any corrective work on the frame, springs or wadding etc. This takes less time than a re-upholstery project.
To re-upholster something, is not to just change the fabric to one of your choice but it is also about making good any defects with the frame, replace wadding and generally make the interior 'good' prior to the upholstery being added. In others words, this is a slightly bigger job, with more skill needed and may take more time than a quick recover assignment.
How do I know the frame is good enough to be reupholstered?
Without assesses the item of furniture it can be difficult to tell from the outside. As a rule of thumb, we suggest to upholstery Glasgow West customers, that the frame needs to be a hardwood, or a combination of wood and metal, as well as be structurally sound and defect-free. Replacing the wadding and cushioning is not difficult and is done in many reupholster assignments without issue.
I've heard that upholsters will not repair a frame. Is this true?
Upholstery is a skill and an art form, encompassing a whole set of skills that are taught and passed from one generation to another in some cases. There are some upholsters who will not repair frames BUT, if you love the items and really cannot bear to part with it, some parts of the frame can be repaired and strengthened. It depends on you, your attachment to the piece as well as your budget.
Can you make an item of furniture more comfortable?
We are often asked this question by upholstery Glasgow west customers! As upholsters we can, to a certain extent, re-style an item of furniture with the amount and type of cushioning and wadding that is in a chair, for example. It may be that your armchair need more cushioning in the lumbar support area of the back of the chair, hence we can add more cushion in this region. Some customers ask us to take the wadding out when they have the item upholstered!
And really, that is the beauty of upholstery - choosing not only the fabric you want but also changing it, re-styling it so that the item fits your life today. Any items of furniture are too previous to simply discard; which items of your furniture would you upholster?
